The freeing of Bida (the farmer who had previously been convicted for 30 years of prison for having hired killers to slain a nun in the state of Pará, in Brasil, and who was set free in a court of appeals on an awfully conceived change of the gunman's statement) had already been hurtful and despised, but now, combative minister of the environment, Marina da Silva, resigns "irrevocably" from office. That is certain to sent a very bad message for the world governments and environmentalists.

 

A farmer hires a gunman to kill a missionary nun who had been accusing him of crimes against the environment and is not convicted by teh Brazilian Justice. A proactive minister who fought the government on environmental issues (especially the minister of agriculture, Reinhold Stephanes) quits. It is certain that many editorial pages and news stories envisioning a growing trend of environmental nonchalance will be published.

 

Let us just hope that the government starts addressing deforestation – with which Brasil and the world have much to loose – more seriously.

Como se não bastasse o inocentamento do fazendeiro Bida (que havia sido condenado a 30 anos de prisão em primeira instância como mandante da morte da missionária Dorothy Stang e que, na apelação, foi inocentado com uma mudança de versão muito mal contada do pistoleiro), agora a ministra Marina Silva pede demissão "irrevogável" ao presidente. Isso vai passar uma mensagem péssima para os governos do mundo e os ambientalistas.

 

Um fazendeiro que manda matar uma freira que o acusava de crimes ambientais é inocentado e uma pró-ativa ministra do meio-ambiente (que vinha batendo de frente com o governo – e especialmente com o ministro da agricultura Reinhold Stephanes – em relação a questões ambientais) se demite. Vai sair por aí matéria definindo nisso uma tendência de descaso ambiental.

 

Vamos ver se isso pelo menos faz com o governo comece a combater mais seriamente o desmatamento, com o qual o Brasil e o mundo tem muito a perder.
